As the world of office communications becomes ever more mobile oriented, many people turn to smartphones as a way to keep in the loop and pick up their emails and messages. With more modern smartphones, the possibilities for connecting to work mailboxes and calendars are quite staggering, and with the array of devices and services currently available, the choice can seem quite overwhelming. This blog post is intended to clarify and simplify some of the major pros and cons of each device, to help you decide which one you should go for. I'll be focusing primarily on emails in a work environment across 3 different smartphone types: Blackberry, iPhone and Android.

Following on from Haree's post a few weeks ago about our lovely new Toyota Prius hybrid car, I thought I'd continue the green theme with some thoughts and suggestions on how to make your IT setup a bit more environmentally friendly. There are already several brilliant technologies for reducing energy consumption, some of which may already be built into your existing operating systems, so it's worth knowing about these, especially as energy costs are set to increase dramatically in the future.

As part of our commitment to being "Green" and "Eco-Friendly", iceConnect has recently invested in a Toyota Prius to help us get to our customers. The car is classified as a hybrid car which, simply put, operates on both unleaded petrol as well as electric. When you are sitting in slow moving traffic, which most people in London find themselves doing every day, the car's engine automatically switches itself off and begins to use the battery instead. This means that you are using zero, yes zero fuel when in standstill or slow moving traffic.

Wireless networking has gone through many iterations in it's short history, and with the advent of smartphones such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android which can connect to a wireless network, the idea of getting rid of all those messy cables and simply connecting your office computers to the network over the airwaves has never seemed so tempting. But is it the right thing to do?

Now don’t get me wrong, the DrayTek 2820 is an exceptional router. Having used them for over 5 years (2800 previously) and the hundreds we have installed, we’ve only ever had two of them go wrong, and that was after 3 years.

However, recently we have been having serious problems with their new firmware releases. Currently they are on firmware v3.3.4 which is my opinion is quite appalling. The entire web user interface has become slow and sluggish, it takes almost half an hour to configure a box, something which we could usually do in about 10 minutes. Especially since their new URL whitelist/blacklist system has been revamped, it was a learning curve but something which now takes too long to configure when we only want a simple setup.
